Torture and International Law

This presentation examines the prohibition against torture and cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment in international law and examines the United States’ approach to the issue, both historically and today. It addresses the controversy surrounding U.S. interrogation methods following the September 11 terrorist attacks and the advocacy efforts to ensure that the U.S. complies with its own laws and its international treaty obligations, including the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, the Convention Against Torture and the Geneva Conventions.
