State Fair 2007: U Do Have Rights!
General_button_5

August 23 through September 3, 2007, The Advocates for Human Rights participated for the third time in the Great Minnesota Get-Together by hosting an organizational exhibit at the State Fair.  We distributed information about four basic human rights: the right to food, the right to an education, the right to health, and the right to housing, and polled visitors on which issue they find most pressing and why.  The campaign was a huge success.  1,373 people voted and 4,706 buttons were distributed along with 2,010 copies of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and 1,780 fact sheets.

Quotes from the Fair

Why Education?

"Education breaks the cycle of poverty."

"We keep making the same mistakes.  Until we learn we will never move forward."

"My sons will be in debt up to their eyeballs for college despite getting only partial scholarships for A grades, 450 hours of community service, being Eagle Scouts (at 14) – No help from government."

"With education children can learn to change their lives and the lives of others."

Why Housing?

"If you have ever slept in a car with your kids because you cannot come up with first and last month’s rent…you will know."

"If you are housed, many other things are possible!"

"I used to live in a homeless shelter.  Young adults and other people...need to be housed [in] a safe environment."

"Housing is a key foundation for the others."

Why Health?

"Our healthcare system is very bad!  As a cancer patient I saw how difficult it is to afford medications!"

"Health is a basic need everyone is entitled to.  As an RN, I see every day what problems result from lack of health care."

"This country – more than any other – can afford it and refuses to sponsor it."

"Healthy children LEARN!  Healthy adults WORK!"

Why Food?

"We tend to overlook the hunger in our own cities."

"Because there is so much poverty and hunger in the U.S. even though we’re the richest country."

"Basic needs of life should not be an issue in this country."

"Having adequate amount of food you can then start embracing your rights to free speech and political involvement.  A hungry belly doesn’t allow a person to participate as well in school or society in general."
