Transitional Justice in Liberia
Between 1989 and 2003, the Liberian people suffered mass displacement, repression and severe human rights abuses during the country’s armed conflict. On August 18, 2003, a Comprehensive Peace Agreement formally ended the prolonged civil strife, and two years later, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Liberia (TRC) was established. The TRC was tasked with investigating the root causes of the conflict, establishing accurate historical records, and recording the truth about the human rights violations that had occurred during the nation’s civil war. The TRC of Liberia is unique in that it is the first TRC to systematically include in its proceedings refugees who fled the country during the conflict. The Liberian Truth and Reconciliation Commission Diaspora Project was launched by The Advocates for Human Rights on June 22, 2006 at the request of the Liberian TRC. The project is designed to give Liberian refugees in the U.S., the UK, and Ghana a role in the truth, reconciliation, and justice process in Liberia. This presentation gives an overview of The Advocates' work with the TRC of Liberia. Suggested audience: General audience Click here to return to the complete list
