State Senator Linda Berglin has represented Minnesota for over 30 years. She was first elected to the House of Representatives in 1972 and served there until her election to the State Senate in 1980. In 1982, Senator Berglin was appointed chair of the Senate Health and Human Services Committee, becoming the first woman to chair a full committee in the history of Minnesota. Currently, Senator Berglin is chair of the Senate Health, Human Services and Corrections Budget Division and sits on over ten legislative committees and commissions, including the Commission on the Economic Status of Women.
Senator Berglin has received over 30 awards for her dedication from groups such as the YWCA, the National Association of Social Workers, the NAACP, the Mental Health Association, the Children’s Defense Fund, the Long Term Care Industry, the Minnesota Psychological Association, the JOBS NOW Coalition, the Minnesota Women’s Consortium, the Minnesota Center for Women in Government, and, in 2003, the Ann Bancroft Award. One of her greatest achievements, the passage of the MinnesotaCare legislation, has provided health insurance for over 100,000 low-income, working people, and was the culmination of many years of hard work and research.
Senator Berglin received her B.F.A. from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. She is married to Glenn Sampson, and is the mother of a 17-year-old daughter, Maria.
