As a modern-day form of slavery, human trafficking is a serious violation of human rights.  It affects every continent and region of the world and continues to sustain annual growth.  After drug smuggling, human trafficking is the second largest criminal industry in the world and the fastest-growing.  It is the most profitable criminal activity for funding transnational organized crime.  Turkey, serving as a bridge between Asia and Europe, is a destination country for trafficking in persons.  This presentation will address the core elements and root causes of human trafficking, its consequences and solutions, and Turkey’s effort to combat human trafficking.  The presentation will also provide an overview of women’s rights in Turkey.

Ilknur Altuntas, a judge in the Ministry of Justice in Ankara, Turkey, is also a 2006 – 2007 International Hubert H. Humphrey Fellow at the Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs at the University of Minnesota.  She has been awarded first-class judge status in Turkey, where she is recognized for her expertise in human trafficking, child abduction, and refugee issues.  She is also a representative from the Ministry of Justice on the National Task Force on Trafficking in Human Beings and is a national representative on the Ad Hoc Committee on Action against Trafficking in Human Beings, which is responsible for drafting the text of the Council of Europe Convention on Action against Trafficking in Human Beings.  She has served on numerous international committees and worked with such organizations as the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and the International Organization for Migration.
