This brown bag presentation will provide an overview of the federal death penalty.  Margulies will also discuss the implications of federal death penalty cases in the Midwest region, including recent capital cases in Iowa and North Dakota.  Application for one CLE credit will be made.

Speaker biography

Since January 2004, JOSEPH MARGULIES has been on the faculty of the MacArthur Justice Center at the University of Chicago Law School.  He received his B.A., with honors, from Cornell University in 1982, and his J.D., cum laude, from Northwestern University School of Law in 1988.  After a federal clerkship in Chicago, Margulies joined the staff of the Texas Capital Resource Center, where he represented men and women on Texas’ death row, eventually becoming Senior Staff Attorney.  In 1994, Margulies moved to Minneapolis, where he worked for two years as a Staff Attorney with the Minnesota Legal Rights Center.  In 1996, he entered private practice, eventually becoming a principal in the firm of Margulies & Richman, PLC, specializing in criminal defense and civil rights litigation.  For the past five years, Margulies has been named a “Super Lawyer” by the Minnesota Journal of Law and Politics.   The same publication also named him one of the top forty criminal defense lawyers in Minnesota, and one of the top 15 lawyers in the state in 2004.    Margulies was also lead counsel in Rasul et al. v. Bush et al., brought on behalf of four prisoners  held at Guantánamo Bay, a case he handled in cooperation with the Center for Constitutional Rights in New York.  Margulies writes and lectures widely on capital and criminal defense, as well as civil liberties in the wake of September 11.
