The 9/11 tragedy changed the world for Muslim-Americans. Anti-Muslim sentiment has increased and Muslims find themselves under heightened public scrutiny. Legal practitioners and others need to understand the issues facing the Muslim community in order to better serve it. Speakers will provide background information on Islam, legal issues facing the Muslim community, and local responses to these issues. Complimentary lunch will be provided for those who preregister. Application will be made for 1.0 Elimination of Bias credit.
Imani Jaafar-Mohammad, Esq., speaking as a board member of the Islamic Resource Group (IRG), is a recent graduate of William Mitchell College of Law and is currently a law clerk for Judge Lloyd Zimmerman in Hennepin County. Imani is also a member of the Board of Directors for the Muslim Youth Scholarship Awards organization (MYLA). She is an active speaker for IRG, and speaks around the Twin Cities on various Islamic topics and co-founded the first Muslim Law Students Association at William Mitchell. Imani has worked with Immigrants and Refugees as a former Legislative Aid to the St. Paul City Council. Imani also volunteers with the Al-Amal Islamic school, the Recent Alumni Committee at William Mitchell, and the Ride the Bus Reading Program at Lincoln Elementary School.
Michele Garnett McKenzie, Esq., is the Director of Minnesota Advocates for Human Rights’ Refugee & Immigrant Program, where she directs the pro bono Asylum Project, client services, and advocacy on legal issues affecting refugees and immigrants. She received her J.D. from the University of Minnesota Law School, and her B.A. from Macalester College in Saint Paul. Prior to her work at Minnesota Advocates, Ms. McKenzie worked in private immigration practice in Saint Paul, Minnesota, and as a Judicial Law Clerk for the Executive Office for Immigration Review in Arizona and Nevada. She has served as an adjunct faculty member of William Mitchell College of Law and as co-chair of the Minnesota State Bar Association Human Rights Committee. She is a frequent lecturer on immigration and asylum law. Ms. McKenzie is a member of the American Immigration Lawyers Association and the Minnesota State Bar Association. She is admitted to practice in the State of Minnesota and the U.S. District Court for the District of Minnesota.
Laura Provinzino, Esq., is the Wellstone Legal Fellow of Minnesota Advocates for Human Rights. She has a B.A. in history and international affairs from Lewis & Clark College in Portland, Oregon and a B.A. in philosophy, politics and economics from Balliol College, Oxford University earned while studying as a Rhodes Scholar. She graduated from Yale Law School in 2003. Prior to her work at Minnesota Advocates, Ms. Provinzino was a Judicial Law Clerk for the Honorable Diana E. Murphy of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit. Ms. Provinzino is admitted to practice in the State of Minnesota and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit.
This human rights speaker series will continue be held on the third Thursday of every other month throughout 2005. Lectures are free and open to the public (registration required).
